Interactive Investor Review 2023

Interactive Investor Overview

Interactive Investor is a UK-based investment provider offering a clear, intuitive platform that is easy to navigate, even for those with limited investing experience. Deposits and withdrawals are generally processed quickly, smoothly, and with little to no cost. Customer support is another strong point, as phone assistance is typically prompt and helpful. Overall, the service is particularly appealing to beginners who are just starting their investing journey.

That said, the platform does have some limitations. Its investment selection is relatively narrow and mainly centered on traditional assets, such as UK-listed funds and shares. More advanced charting features and detailed analytical tools are not available, and users are required to pay a fixed monthly subscription fee. Despite these drawbacks, extensive evaluation and hands-on testing place Interactive Investor among the higher-rated platforms in its category.

Regulation and Investor Protection

Interactive Investor operates as a fully authorized brokerage and is overseen by a well-respected top-tier regulator in the United Kingdom. Clients also benefit from investor compensation arrangements in specific jurisdictions, providing an additional safeguard for their funds. Broker assessments are carried out using real money, with hands-on testing that includes evaluating how efficiently and reliably the withdrawal process works in practice.

How we ranked fees

We categorized Interactive Investor’s costs as low, medium, or high by benchmarking them against the fees charged by all other brokers we have reviewed.

Before diving into the details, it’s useful to clarify the main types of brokerage costs. The two key categories to consider are trading-related fees and non-trading charges.

Trading fees apply when you place trades and may include items such as commissions, bid-ask spreads, financing costs, and currency conversion fees. Non-trading fees, on the other hand, are not directly linked to trading activity and can cover expenses like withdrawal charges or inactivity penalties.

In the sections that follow, we outline the most important fees Interactive Investor applies across different asset classes. For instance, when investing in shares, commission costs are typically the most relevant factor.

We also benchmarked Interactive Investor’s pricing against two comparable platforms, AJ Bell Youinvest and Hargreaves Lansdown. These peers were selected using objective criteria such as the range of products offered, typical client profiles, and overall pricing structures. A more in-depth comparison of alternatives to Interactive Investor is available separately.

To build a clear picture of Interactive Investor’s cost structure, we begin by examining its trading fees.

 Interactive Investor Trading Costs Overview

Interactive Investor’s trading charges fall into the mid-range compared with other brokers.

Clients can select from three different pricing plans, each varying in monthly subscription costs and transaction fees for specific instruments. Under the Investor plan, account holders receive one free trade per month, while the Super Investor plan includes two complimentary trades. The Pension Builder plan does not include any free trades by default, unless the plan is upgraded.

The Pension Builder option is designed as a straightforward Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP). For an additional monthly charge, it can be enhanced to include an ISA, a standard trading account, unlimited Junior ISAs for each child, and one free trade per month.

Subscribers to the Super Investor plan also gain complimentary access to Interactive Investor’s Friends and Family scheme, which allows them to gift up to five Investor plan memberships at no extra cost.

In addition, no commission is charged on regular monthly investments made through the platform’s recurring investment feature. This benefit applies across all plans, with a minimum investment amount of £25 per transaction. Each account can support up to 25 scheduled monthly investments, covering eligible assets such as funds, widely traded shares, ETFs, and investment trusts.

For UK-based clients, Interactive Investor offers both ISA and SIPP accounts. SIPP access is provided through the Pension Builder plan, which is priced at £12.99 per month.

Non-trading fees

Interactive Investor has low non-trading fees.

On the negative side, there is a monthly account fee, which ranges from £9.99 to £19.99 depending on which service plan you use.

Interactive Investor’s currency conversion fees are high for amounts under £100,000. You can either convert your cash manually or, alternatively, the system will do it for you if you want to buy a security in a currency other than what is on your account (e.g. if you want to buy a US stock quoted in dollars and you have your cash balance in pounds).

How to open your account

For UK residents, opening an account is a straightforward and fast procedure. Verification takes place online; if successful, you’re done in about 10 minutes. However, there is no option to provide a non-UK address.

If, for any reason, online verification fails, you’ll need to send in certified copies of your:

  • proof of identity, e.g. passport or UK driver’s license, and
  • proof of residence, e.g. bank statement or utility bill.

In our experience, these copies are received and processed surprisingly quickly (1-2 business days). However, we had a hiccup with the verification process, so the documents that were posted were not immediately accepted by Interactive Investor. Following this, they didn’t reply to our email for 14 days, but then they replied to our follow-up email the next day. It was an experience of extremes: Interactive Investor was either super responsive or extremely unresponsive.

Account base currencies

At Interactive Investor, you can choose from 9 base currencies. This compares favourably to its peers. The available base currencies are GBP, EUR, USD, CAD, HKD, SGD, AUD, SEK, CHF If you live in Ireland, CHF and SEK are not supported.

Why does this matter? For two reasons. If you fund your trading account in the same currency as your bank account or you trade assets in the same currency as your trading account base currency, you don’t have to pay a conversion fee.

A convenient way to save on currency conversion fees is by opening a multi-currency bank account at a digital bank. You can get great currency exchange rates as well as free or cheap international bank transfers. Opening an account only takes a few minutes on your phone.

Deposit fees and options

Depositing money is free with Interactive Investor.

Using a debit card, you can deposit money instantly up to £99,999. You can also send money via bank transfer.  Login Security and Search Features

Interactive Investor uses an additional verification step when you sign in from a new browser or device, provided you have a mobile number linked to your account. In these cases, a one-time security code is sent to your phone via SMS to confirm your identity.

After successfully logging in for the first time on a device, you can opt to save that browser. If you do so, the extra verification step will be skipped for the next 30 days, allowing faster access without repeatedly entering a code.

 Search functionality

On the platform is straightforward and intuitive. Users can look up investments by entering a company name or ticker symbol, which then returns a list of matching results. It is also possible to browse investments by asset category or by market.

Search bars are conveniently placed throughout the interface, including at the bottom of certain pages and within the Research section under “Find an investment.”

Placing orders

You can use the following basic order types. The list is quite limited, you won’t find very sophisticated order types like “one-cancels-the-other”:

  • Market

There are also order time limits you can use:

Research

Interactive Investor’s research tools are easy to navigate, but sophisticated analytic and charting tools are missing.

ProsCons

User-friendly
Technical insights for some stocks

Research Tools, Investment Ideas, and Fundamental Insights

We reviewed the research capabilities offered through the web trading platform. Overall, these features are useful and thoughtfully designed, although certain tools come with a more limited scope. The research sections are visually clear and modern, which helps users quickly understand the information presented. However, the charting and analytical tools lag behind more advanced platforms, with less detailed data and fewer options for customization.

Trading ideas

Interactive Investor also supplies a variety of trading and investment concepts, including a range of pre-constructed model portfolios. A good example is the Low-cost growth portfolio, which is composed of nine ETFs, each assigned a specific allocation.

For investors interested in themed strategies, the ii Super 60 collection is a notable highlight. Within each investment theme—such as emerging market stocks or sterling-based bonds—Interactive Investor’s research team compiles a list of recommended investments. These selections are guided by criteria including past returns, cost efficiency, risk considerations, and liquidity. Depending on an investor’s objectives, the recommendations may focus on low-cost ETFs or, alternatively, on funds and investment trusts aimed at performance, blue-chip exposure, or smaller-cap opportunities. These lists are updated on a regular basis.

We also found value in the platform’s interviews with fund managers. During these discussions, managers share insights into their funds, portfolio composition, and market expectations, with the videos made available directly on the website.

Fundamental data

The platform also provides access to fundamental information, allowing users to review a wide range of key data. This includes historical performance charts as well as financial statements and reports from recent years.

Charting

Interactive Investor has poor charting tools. You can use only 10 technical indicators. This is much fewer than what most brokers provide.

News Feed

Interactive Investor offers a comprehensive news feed that can be customized to match individual interests. The main news stream is accessible even without opening a trading account and features content written by Interactive Investor’s in-house analysts, along with contributions from selected guest writers.

Once logged in, the news feed automatically highlights articles related to the assets held in your portfolio. Users can further refine what appears in their feed by setting preferences based on asset classes, sectors, investment approaches, or even specific authors they follow.

Within the fundamental data section, the news area brings together market news, research reports, and official company announcements in one place.

Additional Research Tools

Among the extra research features, a technical analysis tool called Technical Insight stands out. It identifies chart patterns forming across various instruments, including currency pairs, stock indices, and UK-listed shares, and indicates whether price movements are leaning bullish or bearish. During our testing, this tool proved to be a helpful addition for market analysis.

Regulation and Safety of Interactive Investor

Is Interactive Investor regulated?
Yes. Interactive Investor is authorized and supervised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

The company is headquartered in the United Kingdom and began operations in 1995. It was later incorporated under its current legal structure in 2003.

Is Interactive Investor safe?
When assessing the safety of a broker, it is essential to focus on two key aspects: the level of investor protection in place if something goes wrong, and the firm’s corporate background.

How you are protected
Protection arrangements can vary depending on the broker’s legal entity and regulator. In this case, all clients fall under Interactive Investor Services Limited. As a result of FCA oversight, customers benefit from investor compensation coverage of up to £85,000, providing a strong level of protection in the event of broker insolvency.

Company Background

Interactive Investor operates as a direct-to-consumer investment provider and is headquartered in the United Kingdom. The firm has existed in its current corporate structure since 2003, while its earlier entity, Interactive Investor International, was originally established in 1995. A long operating history like this is often seen as a positive sign, as it indicates the company has navigated and endured multiple financial downturns over time.

More recently, Interactive Investor became part of abrdn, a publicly traded financial services group that is included in the FTSE 100, further strengthening its corporate backing and credibility.

Bottom line

Interactive Investor Review: Key Strengths and Limitations

Interactive Investor ranks among the largest brokerage firms in the UK and operates under the supervision of the top-tier Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

The broker offers a clean, intuitive web platform alongside a well-built mobile app, making it easy for users to manage their investments. Funding and withdrawing money is generally smooth and quick, while customer support—especially via phone—is responsive and helpful, providing clear answers without long delays.

That said, Interactive Investor is not without its downsides. Its asset selection is largely limited to traditional investments, such as UK-focused funds and a fairly standard range of shares. In addition, technical analysis features are basic, and users must pay a recurring monthly subscription fee.

Still, with no minimum deposit requirement and access to reliable, easy-to-use trading platforms, Interactive Investor can be worth testing—particularly for investors who value simplicity and strong customer support.
